Sandwalkers, developed by Goblinz Studio, translates the harsh survival mechanics of hex-grid exploration into a distinctive turn-based roguelite. Setting out across the chaotic climate anomalies of the Phithi, your caravan belongs to the Mka tribe, tasked with gathering lost knowledge, establishing outposts, and ultimately reviving the Mother Tree Umama.

On PlayStation 5, the game delivers an evocative presentation. The rich pixel-art landscapes, distinct biome aesthetics, and moody ambient soundtrack fit the post-apocalyptic desert atmosphere cleanly. Instant load times thanks to the console’s SSD keep expedition transitions swift, and visual performance remains completely smooth throughout.

Where Sandwalkers shines brightest is its survival and resource juggling. Rather than purely focusing on combat, success demands respect for the Phithi’s volatile climate. Acid rain, extreme heat, and sudden storms directly govern movement logistics, resource consumption, and battle field effects. Managing caravan morale, food, and gear across branching narrative encounters requires constant tactical compromises.

Combat plays out on a side-view tactical lane where positioning, armor management, and class synergies are critical. Classes like the Archaeologist, Hunter, and Scout each offer distinct playstyles and out-of-combat abilities. Experimenting with party builds and passing unlocked generational bonuses to future caravans creates an engaging roguelite loop.

However, the transition to console isn’t without friction. The user interface remains heavily tied to mouse-driven PC design. While DualSense analog navigation functions adequately, moving through layered inventory tabs, nested status tooltips, and tactical sub-menus during long play sessions feels clunky compared to native cursor movement. Additionally, the game does not take significant advantage of DualSense features like adaptive triggers or nuanced haptics.

Run repetition also sets in after the initial dozen hours. While weather dynamics force adaptation, event nodes and enemy archetypes begin to recycle noticeably, making mid-game runs rely more on routine attrition math than unexpected discovery.
Final Thoughts
Despite UI hurdles and pacing dips, Sandwalkers offers a compelling marriage of party-building strategy, environmental survival, and striking pixel artistry. It is an easy recommendation for fans of tactical roguelites like Curious Expedition or The Banner Saga.
