Puzzle Bobble Everybubble! is a cute puzzle game that stars the legendary Bub and Bob. The original game was released back in 1994 and since then it has seen various games in the franchise and obviously because of the style of gameplay it has not really altered over the course of the series. And while co-op is not really new, but now thanks to the Nintendo Switch you can have 4-player co-op action on your couch, which adds a lot of fun and feeling of playing N64 back in the90’s with friends on a Friday night.
For those of you that have never heard of Puzzle Bobble (Bust-A-Move) it is basically a puzzle game that sees different colour balls bouncing on the screen and you must make rows of same colour to burst the bubbles and allow you clear the screen. You can do combos and the game has various power-ups to help you complete a stage so you can move on to the next. It is very simple sounding, but in reality, it is much trickier.
Puzzle Bobble Everybubble takes place on Rainbow Islands, which was the sequel to the original Bubble Bobble so the backdrops will probably look familiar if you have ever played the original game back in the day. The story is that the minions that look like smaller versions of Bub decided to make a deal with Grommit to have the above to shoot bubbles from their mouth. This is a disaster as soon they have no control and the bubbles over run the land, which is where Bub must come in a pop them all.
There are the two modes of play available in the game and the first is your traditional style. This is where you must clear the screen as quick as possible so that you can move onto the next. You have the second one where the bubbles come at the top of the screen and they push down existing bubbles and your goal is to survive as long as possible, which is very competitive and fun and provides a change to the original style.
The multiplayer is the big daw for Puzzle Bobble Everybubble! and don’t worry if you have no friends for a night of fun, you can get the CPU to stand in. There is a kind of online, but you can’t play the story mode with friends worldwide, but two or four players can join in on Bub’s Tower mode. You also have a mode called Puzzle Boble Vs Space invaders that blends the two together, which is quite fun to play. The graphics are cute and coulourful, but not really improved but that is fine as it still looks good and play fun.
Final Thoughts
Puzzle Bobble Everybubble! is a great addition to an already great series. The game has some minor gripes, but for the overall it is great and nothing that reduces the fun factor. Co-op is fun, especially when played locally with a group of friends to take on the story mode while being in the same physical space. This is a worthy purchase and adds another great entry in the series.
