The Soulslike genre is quite a popular game style. There have been a few games that have been based around it and while some people love them, Myself I find them to be hit and miss and they either appeal to me or not. When I heard about a game from Acme Gamestudios and Tinybuild called Astertgos: Curse of the Stars that is soulslike and based around Greek mythology then naturally I was curious. Astertgos see you controlling the main character called Hilda who is on a quest to lift the curse on her city called Aphes. The story might be a simple affair but the implementation is good and the characters you encounter are fun and interesting to interact with and makes the game a real pleasure to play. After playing it for a few hours I think that it is not really a soullike game, but I find it plays more like an action-adventure game and this is important as for me I just want to keep coming back and playing it until I complete it.
As can been seen in the video above combat is fun and engaging with the enemies have a good learning curve. You collect your weapons and other items so you can create a inventory that will enable you to be well equipped depending on how you want to play the game. You have the usual light and heavy attacks along with combos and using actions to combine with your regular weapon attacks so that you can take out multiple enemies or single, bigger enemies throughout the world. The bosses aren’t frustrating to kill and I never felt the urge once to give up trying and usually once I learnt the pattern then I overcome them with no problems.
The visuals are beautiful and the world looks detailed and will make you go wow at certain points throughout. The soundtrack matches the environment and everything just comes together to game a gameplay experience that is one of fun and a sense of fulfilment when you get to complete it. The game also plays well on the new Valve Steam Deck and everything looks as it should, including the text and can be read easily. So, a game that is good for on the go as well as on a desktop.
Final Thoughts
Astertgos: Curse of the Stars does not fit into the soulslike genre and this is not a bad thing. Having mechanics of the genre but a feel of a action-adventure game this makes it a perfect game for beginners to pick up and play and veterans to enjoy the beautiful game. Yes, it is not as complex but this is the charm of it. Buy you will not be disappointed.
