Put a Spell On Me

Spooky season will soon be upon us so what better way to spend it then playing a horror game. Lovecraft’s Untold Stories 2 is a action role playing game with rogue-like elements which should equal a lot of fun. The game initially begins in the year 1926 when some very mysterious events have been happening. Madness ensures when an artist unveils a painting in Paris that effects anyone who views it. This causes the Great Old Ones to reappear and the goal is to prevent them causing havoc.

Loads Of Character

When you load up the game you have your choice of three characters and these are the Professor, a Detective and a Witch returning from the first game or the new Aliens, Medium or Veteran. Everyone has their own skillsets and weapons which will upgrade as you progress through the game. Fans of Lovecraft will immediately pick up on themes and tropes as they play.

All About Perspective

The perspective is that of a 2.5D and has classic RPG elements where you must use abilities and weapons. So, if you have played a few game in this genre then you will be familiar with the varied attacks you can unleash on your enemies. At times the action is so intense on screen that you will find yourself doing random attacks rather than carefully planned strategies.

The game also has a crafting system which is ok but in order to craft new stuff you need to constantly be looking to collect the items required. This is fine, but the game feels like you are doing more collecting than investigating the world. Having rogue-like elements mean that when you die, you must go back to the section and complete it again but without the help of health drops as they respawn randomly so you will probably get killed again.

Scary

The main protagonists have good personalities, and this helps you relate to the characters, but the enemies are more uninspired and don’t bring much to the game. The dialogue is told with a comic book style and this seems to work well, but there is not enough oddness or scary stuff to hold your attention and make it seems mundane. The visuals are nice and while it looks good, the sound effects don’t do much for the atmosphere. The soundtrack helps with this and adds a mysterious feel to the game.

Final Thoughts

Lovecraft’s Untold Stories 2 is the sequel that does not bring anything to the franchise. The delays probably didn’t help matters and while there is elements from the first, there is no improvement on this. This game will not be for newcomers as there is no tutorials for the gameplay and often you will find yourself using the help menus to navigate, so will put off a lot of gamers looking to get into the series. A good game that is more for players of the first one.
