Space Invaders Invincible Collection Nintendo Switch Review

Nostalgia Fun Brought Back in 2021

Gamers over a certain age will no doubt remember a iconic game called Space Invaders. This took the arcades and home gaming by storm and I for one remember lots of fun in my childhood. Over the years there have been many different versions released for various consoles and computers. 2021 have been a great year for retro remakes and this is the second compilation to be released of Space Invaders. So let us take a look to see what fun this one has to offer.

Release Date:

Thanks to the publisher for the review code.

The Space Invaders Invincible Collection is a compilation of 11 titles from over the years starting with the 1978 original arcade version which was black and white. This version only allowed the players score a total of 9,990 points. A colour version was released the same year which allowed the gamer to score more than the 9,990 points in the black and white version. Both these versions are fun to play and have converted over to the Switch pretty well.

Then we have Space Invaders Part 2 which was the slightly enhanced version. In this sequel some invaders would split when hit and a UFO would drop more invaders to make the level trickier. Then we have two Taito games from 1979 and 1980 called Lunar Rescue and Space Cyclone respectively. Lunar Rescue is a good game that never really got the recognition it deserved. You piloted a ship through asteroids and land on a pad to rescue people and return them to the mothership by shooting asteroids ascending.

Space Cyclone is a game that seemed to slip under my radar as I never heard of it. It is a shooter that is fun to play, but hard to understand. Then we get to the 90’s where we have The Majestic Twelve: The Space Invaders Part IV and Super Space Invaders 91. These are faster-paced versions of the classic formula and look nice in 16-bit visuals. I found the level where you got to rescue a cow entertaining and is makes replayability fun. Space Invaders DX is included which has the original game, a 2-player mode and parody mode.

Also included in this collection are the more modern games. These are Space Invaders Extreme, Space Invaders Gigamax 4 SE and Arkanoid Vs Space Invaders as a download content. These are fun to play, thought not as much as the originals.

Final Thoughts

Space Invaders has always been a great iconic game and this compilation features most of the classic versions and some of the modern titles. Some others were missing like Space Invaders 95 and return of the Space Invaders, but still a great collection of games to bring back the nostalgia feeling.
