Released into Early Access on March 9, 2026, Hive Blight is the latest offering from Belgian indie studio OptizOnion. Following the success of Bounty of One, the developers have pivoted from bullet-hell survival to a tactical roguelite autobattler. It’s a game where high-stakes strategy meets a charming, hand-drawn miniature world, and for the most part, it sticks the landing with precision.

The Premise: War in the Undergrowth

The kingdom is under siege by the “Fungomancer,” a villainous entity spreading a parasitic blight across the land. Your task is to unite rival insect clans—each with their own distinct biological warfare styles—to push back the infection. The game currently features three primary clans: the offensive-heavy Vespada, the poison-dealing Silent Cabbale, and the support-focused Sweet Symphoney.
Strategic Depth and Synergy

The core loop involves drafting units and placing them on a hex-based grid. Since your warriors attack automatically, success is entirely dependent on pre-battle preparation. The synergy system is surprisingly deep; combining clans allows for devastating combos, such as using the Vespada’s “Shatter” debuff to amplify the Silent Cabbale’s poison ticks.
The shared health pool system adds a layer of tension. If a unit falls, it’s revived post-battle provided your total “Hive Health” hasn’t hit zero. This encourages risky plays and aggressive positioning that would be too punishing in traditional permadeath roguelikes.
Performance and Sound

Technically, Hive Blight runs smoothly on most systems. A notable improvement since its beta phase is the inclusion of a full soundscape—the original lack of music was a major community complaint that has since been rectified with a whimsical, orchestral score that fits the “epic small-scale” theme perfectly.
Final Thoughts
Hive Blight is a standout in the crowded roguelite market. It manages to feel relaxing due to its autobattler nature while remaining mentally stimulating through its intricate synergy system. While the Early Access tag means content is still being added, the foundation is incredibly solid.
