Sephonie is a 3D platformer that has the visual style of the low poly count of the PS2. The premise of the game follows three biologists that are exploring an island to seek out primates. The adventure begins at a beach and each having a device called an Onyx, which is an implant that helps our explorers explore the island they washed up on. The story unfolds through their dreams and memories and sometimes the story does feel like it is slightly unfocused due to too much going on in the scenes.
Besides the interesting story the game actually stands out thanks to its amazing visuals, 3D platform action and puzzles. You have the option to change between all three characters and each bring their own skills to the table to help you make progress through the story. Being a visual novel there is no combat involved so there is no dying involved just a fluid experience. The puzzles are fun and challenging, but at times you may struggle as there is no obvious direction to go.
The visuals are very unique in the fact that they use the low-poly style from the PS2 era being presented in modern HD graphics. The islands atmosphere is unique with a dream-like state that is accompanied by a surreal soundtrack to offer the most relaxing time you will have playing the game. The puzzles break up the platform action and complements it so you don’t get bored of the game.
The game does have a few minor points, but nothing that is game breaking. The story narrative does suffer a little and some of the characters stories could do with some more depth, but considering it is a Indie developed title the game is pretty amazing and offers a nice, calming gameplay experience to enjoy.
Final Thoughts
Sephonie is a fun visual novel with an intriguing storyline and stunning visuals. Emulating the graphic style of the PS2 game this allows to create a atmosphere that makes for an fun and engaging gameplay while staying relaxed as no fighting is required.
