Gameplay & Mechanics

Ashes of Elrant brings back core systems fans loved—turn-based combat, exploration, and the Reward (Talent) Board—while layering on new features. The Reward Board returns, accompanied by interconnected areas rife with secrets, puzzles, and superbosses. It enhances exploration in clever ways, arguably exceeding the base game in satisfaction.
On the new mechanics front, overlays like the “PP” (party‑wide points) allow unlocking bonuses such as fishing, stat boosts, and Overdrive enhancements. While these create more avenues for customization, they also reduce combat tension; starting fights in Overdrive can feel overpowered. The simplified crystal and crafting system streamlines progression—welcome for some, but it narrows build variety
A notable stumbling block: the excavation minigame for Class Emblems. Meant to yield powerful rewards, it is frustratingly randomized and tedious—one reviewer reports it can take up to 20 minutes just to dig one emblem. Meanwhile, the fishing minigame is present, though unremarkable—fine, but not inspired.
Narrative & Characters

Story-wise, Ashes of Elrant aims to enrich Chained Echoes lore by exploring the origins of the Order of Leonar and shedding light on Lenne’s past. The White Wolf stands out as the DLC’s most memorable character. However, the overall narrative feels lighter in emotional depth and philosophical weight compared to the base game. Some characters feel underutilized—several party members appear to pad the roster rather than serve essential story purposes.
Reception & Verdict
Chained Echoes: Ashes of Elrant is a heartfelt extension of a beloved indie JRPG. It recaptures the aesthetic, combat, and exploration that made the base game special, while offering fresh faces, new areas, and additional lore. Yet, it falls short of the base game’s ambition—its story treads lightly on emotional beats, some mechanics feel unbalanced or cumbersome, and a shorter runtime limits its depth. Still, for fans yearning for one more trip with the Crimson Wings, this DLC delivers just enough to satisfy—but it won’t displace the original’s place in your heart.
