Dandy and Randy DX PC Steam Review

Indie publisher Ratalaika have been publishing some pretty interesting games recently. Also recently there have been a lot of cute 2D games that have been inspired from the classic 16-bit era platformers. The latest title that they have released is from Indie developer Asterstic Game Studio called Dandy and Randy DX.  This 2D top-down adventure is based on old-school gaming with a modern visual look.

Let’s Go Digging

In Dandy and Randy DX, you have two archaeologists who may not be the greatest in their field. They are on an adventure to recover an artifact called the Celestial Stone, which would give them the fame and fortune that they desperately need. You begin the game and you get your choice of character that you want to play from either Dandy, who is a purple duck or Randy, a blue rabbit.

The game can be played as a standalone or local co-op so that you can get a friend help you if you need some help at some point. Upon playing you will get a sense of familiarity as the main inspiration has been drawn from the classic The Legend of Zelda franchise from the 16-bit era. Being able to run around and explore one area at a time, the game is a linear experience. To advance to the next area you must defeat a boss and as a reward you get items for your effort.

We’re Going on an Adventure

Every area in Dandy and Randy DX looks and feels different as the music, enemies, and challenges changes to give variety. There is a basic game element that is constant like finding keys of certain colours that open doors You have two difficulty settings, standard and an easier mode in case of younger gamers find it too hard.

The visuals of Dandy and Randy DX are colourful and have a crisp, clean look with a feel of 16-bit graphics. The music is great and add to the atmosphere of the game and the story is well written and better than I expected it to be. This game will appeal to all ages and gives the appropriate difficulty to match the experience.

Final Thoughts

Dandy and Randy DX is a fun and great 2D platform game. The graphics are nice, colourful, and cheerful. The story is interesting and will hold attention of young and old alike. If you are a fan of old-school platform games like The Legend of Zelda then this game is for you.
